Lobe AI Review

A Lobe AI Review in 2026 reviews a ghost: Microsoft deprecated Lobe in January 2023, the desktop app is no longer developed, and the parts that made it special were never open-sourced.

Scored on the six-dimension BrokenCtrl methodology, set independently of the affiliate link. How scoring works.

Dimension Basis Score
Transparency The site persists without plainly telling visitors the product is dead. 5 / 10
Data Privacy Local desktop training — genuinely private by architecture while it worked. 6 / 10
Safety Architecture No cloud dependency meant no breach surface; the model itself was competent, not state-of-art. 5 / 10
Corporate Conduct Microsoft bought it, absorbed the ideas, deprecated the product, and never open-sourced the app. 4 / 10
Bias Mitigation No published bias evaluation for its classification models. 4 / 10
Regulatory Alignment Nothing breached; a discontinued product carries no forward obligations. 5 / 10
Total 29 / 60

Lobe let non-programmers train image-classification models by drag and drop, on their own machine, no cloud and no code. Microsoft acquired it, and by January 2023 had deprecated its model as “not aligned” with its web-based AI Builder tooling. Verified (Microsoft documentation; project statements). Development stopped; the team’s tooling for exporting models was open-sourced, but the app and site never were.

Lobe was the rare mainstream tool built local-first — your training photos never left your machine. Its absorption into cloud-based tooling is the category’s direction of travel stated plainly: the privacy-preserving version existed, worked, and was retired in favour of products that meter the cloud. The site still stands, which is how a dead product keeps collecting search traffic.

Do not build anything new on Lobe. Existing exported models keep working where deployed, but the app is unmaintained software with no future fixes.

Dash AI — The living heir: open-source, local-first ML training from a university consortium, scored 43/60 here.

Teachable Machine — Google’s browser-based trainer — the closest surviving no-code experience.

Is Lobe AI still available?

The site is up but Microsoft deprecated Lobe in January 2023. The desktop app is no longer developed and was never open-sourced.

Was Lobe private?

Yes, by architecture: training ran locally on your machine and photos never left it. That design is precisely what its cloud-based successors abandoned.

What should I use instead of Lobe?

Dash AI for a local-first open-source workbench, or Google’s Teachable Machine for the simplest no-code training experience.
